Antioxidants, vitamins, and fatty acids are some of the powerful benefits found within many fruits. Unlike refined products like chocolate, chips, and soft drink, fruit can promote both internal and external health benefits with a delicious taste; a huge bonus for acne sufferers. Read on for 5 fruits that help combat acne.
1. Avocado
While avocados are considered a vegetable by many around the dinner table, they are scientifically considered to be a fruit – a single seeded berry to be precise! Great in smoothies and salads, this versatile fruit is a rich source of vitamin E, which is a wonderful free radicals warrior that works to support youthful and supple skin. Avocados also contain vitamin C, which reduces inflammation, accelerates acne healing, and helps improve the appearance of scarring.
2. Strawberries
These delicious ruby fruits, unlike avocados, aren’t considered berries, but rather an ‘aggregate fruit’ (we’re not in Kansas anymore!). They are the perfect sweet treat that contains a high amount of antioxidants. This is fantastic, as this means strawberries help prevent sebum from oxidising, which causes clogged pores and ultimately painful blemishes if left untreated. Strawberries also contain vitamin C. You can also use the leaves, double whammie!
3. Pomegranate
Other than being visually aesthetic on any fruit platter, pomegranates are renowned for their nutrients. Their seeds are particularly powerful, as they contain antioxidants, vitamin C and K, and omega-3 fatty acids, which are fantastic in promoting smoother, healthier, and younger-looking skin. Pomegranate fights acne from the outside as well! The oil derived from their seeds strengthens the epidermis and is deeply moisturising. Their seeds also contain anti-microbial properties to help treat infections.
4. Watermelon
Watermelon is a popular fruit on any acne-fighting list. While they’re deliciously hydrating, they also contain vitamin A (which repairs and creates new cells), B, C, and potassium. On top of this, watermelon also contains amino acids like L-citrulline, which is converted into L-arginine within our bodies. L-arginine works to increase collagen production and encourages wound healing. This is extremely helpful for those struggling to heal old acne and blemishes.
5. Blueberries
Blueberries are a worthy addition to your skin care for acne. Just like the other fruits on our list, they are packed with antioxidants. They also contain manganese, a mineral that, in healthy doses, helps reduce inflammation and encourages the absorption of some vitamins, like vitamin B and E. It also contains vitamin K and C.
